Farewell to Dr Hecker

DR. KATHERINE J. HECKER, M.D.To my dear patients and families at PYAM:

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to let you all know that I will be leaving PYAM effective February 1, 2018.

In the last year, my personal life has been wrought with many events affecting the health and well-being of myself and my family. This has prompted a move to Wisconsin to be closer to extended family for support. Unfortunately, my commute is often 5+ hours per week. In a time when my family continues to heal and needs me more than ever, I have decided to work closer to home to allow me to spend more time with my family.

I have had four fantastic years with PYAM, during which it has been a privilege and my pleasure to be your health “coach” with the fun and challenges of health and parenting. I often say, “My job is not work; I get to play every day!” I have truly enjoyed meeting your beautiful children and watching them grow. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet such wonderful families and be part of your family’s experiences and memories. Thank you for allowing me the great honor and opportunity to coach you – the experts! – on your children’s health.

I leave knowing that you will all be very well cared for by the incredible, caring, and compassionate team of pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners at PYAM. I will miss each and every one of you!

All the best to you and your family! Stay healthy 🙂

Dr. Kate Hecker

In Memoriam Dr Coyne

On Friday November 10, 2017, Dr. Coyne passed away after a courageous fight against cancer.

Dr. Coyne was a pediatrician with Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine from 1973 to 2016. He was adored by his many patients, staff, and partners. The news of his passing has been heartbreaking for everyone at PYAM.  Dr. Hecker said it best; “Few people exude joy unto others the way that Dr. Coyne did. EVERYONE knew “Dr. Coyne” – for his handful of suckers (each kid got 5, not 1!), his quick wit and easy laugh, his patience with his patients, his musical heart heard by his humming or whistling as he walked down the hall.” Many of his patients remember him for asking them “How many belly buttons they had”, or if Elmo or Grover were in their ears. His birdcalls could be heard from his exam room. Many times, we would see him walking the hallways trying to calm down an infant before sending them home with Mom. His kindness was not just given to his patients but his staff as well; he was always there to help if we needed him. Even after he retired, we would receive emails about the latest medical update that he read about or just a note updating us on how he was doing. There was usually a funny story and always asking us how we were doing. Our hearts broke on Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Karen and his children Chris, Adam, Courtney, Nick, Shannon, Alex, and Victoria, their spouses and his 17 grandchildren who he adored.

The offices of Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine will be closed from 10 AM to 1PM on Wednesday November 15th so that we may honor him at his funeral at St. Agnes Church, Mass starting at 11 AM.

Rest in Peace Dr. Coyne you will be missed by your PYAM family.

To: My Patients & Families

This letter is to inform you that I am resigning as a Nurse Practitioner at Pediatric & Young Adult Medicine, as I will be relocating to Madison, WI. It is a bittersweet decision as I continue to care for children while being closer to family and my significant other. I have greatly enjoyed my work at the clinic. My last day at the clinic will be October 6th, 2017.

If your next appointment is occurring before my date of departure, I will be delighted to see you at the scheduled time. Beyond that, my fellow providers will be available for your healthcare needs. We do have a new Pediatric Nurse Practitioner I highly recommend, Jenifer Flegel, who is a skilled professional I hold in high regard. I feel confident that all of my patients will be in excellent hands under the continued care at Pediatric & Young Adult Medicine.

I would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation with me. Working at Pediatric & Young Adult Medicine has been a wonderful experience for me that I will not soon forget, and I will surely miss seeing you and all of my patients.

Yours sincerely,

Anna B. Pokrzywinski, APRN

Flu shots At Pyam

At PYAM we wholeheartedly endorse the CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendation that all children ages 6- months to 21 years receive a influenza vaccine each year.

Despite not being able to prevent all influenza disease, the flu shot does provide protection from severe disease. It is especially important for our high risk patients to remember to get immunized each year

In case you’re wondering, the Flumist will not be offered again this year. It was not approved for use.

To schedule your flu shot only appointment simply call our central appointment line at 651-256-6714.

Dr Coyne has Retired

October 14, 2016

Dear Patients,

Dr Terence CoyneIt is with deep regret that I announce I will be leaving Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine at the end of 2016. It has been my pleasure to service the community for the past 43 years as your family’s pediatrician, but I have decided it is time for me to spend more time with my family.

I’ve been very fortunate to care for so many wonderful children. I’ve helped provide care for many beautiful little babies during my career and have had the privilege to watch them go through infancy, childhood and grow into adults, and watch them raise their own families. I have been able to share your successes and tried to help you through the difficulties of growing up. I’ve watched my patients grow in maturity, confidence, and independence. You have given me a wonderful career. I will take these memories with me as a constant reminder to how privileged I am to have been a part of your family’s life.

I appreciate the loyalty you have shown to me throughout the years and hope you will extend that loyalty to the other providers at Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine. The clinic is fortunate to have seven pediatricians and three nurse practitioners. Each of them has been an excellent partner, and they will provide outstanding care for your children.

This has been a difficult decision to make, and I will miss seeing each of you. I can’t express enough how grateful I am to you for allowing me to care for your children. I wish each of you the fullest of lives and the best health.

All my best,
Terence Coyne, MD

Flu shots for 2016

flu-shots-2016bAfter a mild flu season it is easy to forget how very nasty the flu can be. One of the many reasons why the flu is so difficult to manage from a community health stand point is its unpredictability. No one can say that any given year will produce a virulent strain that sickens and hospitalizes hundreds, or whether it will be a mild flu season.

Our suggestion is to be proactive and get immunized this fall when clinics are available, or during well visits. When you and your children are vaccinated, it doesn’t matter what kind of season it turns out to be. Last year, doctors across the country reported that the vaccinated kids who did get the flu (no vaccine is 100%), had a much milder case. Either way, you win if you get vaccinated.  We have flu shots available now.  For flu shot clinic times and locations check our website or facebook page.

flu-shots-2016Unfortunately, On June 22, 2016, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that Flu Mist not be used in the 2016-17 influenza season due to poor effectiveness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are supporting this recommendation.  PYAM will also be supporting this recommendation given by the ACIP, CDC, and AAP and will not have Flu Mist available this year.

Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)

On June 22, 2016, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that Flu Mist not be used in the 2016-17 influenza season due to poor effectiveness.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are supporting this recommendation.

PYAM will also be supporting this recommendation given by the ACIP, CDC, and AAP, and has cancelled all orders for Flu Mist.  We are reaching out to our vendors and hope to be increasing our supply of the injectable thimerosal-free influenza vaccine so that all PYAM patients can be vaccinated during the 2016-2017 influenza season.  At this time, we will receive a limited supply of the influenza vaccine this fall, and have been put on a waiting list with several vendors for more vaccine as it becomes available.

We understand that the absence of the Flu Mist is likely to be disappointing for many of patients.  PYAM strongly believes that every child should be vaccinated with the Influenza Vaccine.  Please watch our web site at www.pyam.com and our face book page for updates on the Influenza Vaccine.

Thank you,

Dr. Lidle to leave PYAM

To My Patients and Families:

Dr Calley LidleIt is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from PYAM on July 31, 2015. I have made the decision to join another practice. I have spent 6 of the most meaningful years of my life at PYAM. Meeting your children and watching you grow as a family has deeply affected me. I woke up each morning looking forward to seeing each and every child. Your children have been like family to me.

The decision to leave PYAM has been a difficult one. I have great confidence in my partners’ ability to provide outstanding care for your children. I would be happy to discuss this with you and help direct you towards one of the remaining providers.

Thanks for making my work so meaningful and fun,

Calley Lidle, MD
