On Friday November 10, 2017, Dr. Coyne passed away after a courageous fight against cancer.
Dr. Coyne was a pediatrician with Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine from 1973 to 2016. He was adored by his many patients, staff, and partners. The news of his passing has been heartbreaking for everyone at PYAM. Dr. Hecker said it best; “Few people exude joy unto others the way that Dr. Coyne did. EVERYONE knew “Dr. Coyne” – for his handful of suckers (each kid got 5, not 1!), his quick wit and easy laugh, his patience with his patients, his musical heart heard by his humming or whistling as he walked down the hall.” Many of his patients remember him for asking them “How many belly buttons they had”, or if Elmo or Grover were in their ears. His birdcalls could be heard from his exam room. Many times, we would see him walking the hallways trying to calm down an infant before sending them home with Mom. His kindness was not just given to his patients but his staff as well; he was always there to help if we needed him. Even after he retired, we would receive emails about the latest medical update that he read about or just a note updating us on how he was doing. There was usually a funny story and always asking us how we were doing. Our hearts broke on Friday.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Karen and his children Chris, Adam, Courtney, Nick, Shannon, Alex, and Victoria, their spouses and his 17 grandchildren who he adored.
The offices of Pediatric and Young Adult Medicine will be closed from 10 AM to 1PM on Wednesday November 15th so that we may honor him at his funeral at St. Agnes Church, Mass starting at 11 AM.
Rest in Peace Dr. Coyne you will be missed by your PYAM family.
